Description
The treatment of Panic Disorder (PD) entails the use of pharmacologic compounds as well as cognitive-behavioral techniques; these two interventions appear to be equally effective. The purpose of this paper is to provide an up-to-date review of theoretical models that explain the disorder and cognitive-behavioral techniques that have been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of PD. Behavioral theories of anxiety disorders posit that pathological fears are acquired and maintained through classical and operant conditioning; cognitive theories posit that maladaptive thinking styles lead to emotional upset. Based on these theoretic models some techniques have been developed and validated in the treatment of PD: education about the nature and physiology of anxiety and panic, breathing retraining, muscle relaxation, cognitive restructuring, interoceptive exposure and exposure to external cues (agoraphobic situations). The authors analytically describe the purposes and the technical features of each of these approaches, underlining the parallel importance of psychoeducational intervention aimed at involving family members in the therapeutic process.[:]
