Description
This paper presents a series of dreams which a group of individuals had before the death of their beloved. These people were followed during a study carried out in collaboration with the Sacro Cuore Hospice, Rome, Italy where both terminal patients and their relatives formed part of same program of assistance. The observations suggest that the grief process in some cases starts even before the actual death of the beloved and that this status is often represented in the dream dimension. The observations on dreams lead to the hypothesis of a condensed and latent presence of the first two phases of the grief process – “shock” and “chaotic ambivalence” – in parallel with the usual patterns of the psychic function. This kind of research is not extensively reported in literature; in the present study, dreams are discussed and commented on from a psycho-dynamic perspective.[:]
